Makoto Sato,
Director of Research and Education Program for Life Science, University of Fukui

We, the Fukui Brain Project members, are attempting to take advantage of the modern revolutionized technologies, such as genetics, molecular biology, imaging tools and so forth, to explore the brain development and its disorders. Engineers, basic and clinical neuroscientists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, radiologists sit together with educators to solve the mysteries of brain function and to develop individual ‘intelligence’ with various approaches.

It is evident that genes are not the sole force in brain development, and an early experience and education are capable of changing it. We should re-visit and tackle with a common problem of great interest such as “nature or nurture” issue with our cutting-edge tools. Furthermore, we should launch multidisciplinary research, training and education for better development of individual ‘intelligence’. Our definition for ‘intelligence’ includes ‘emotional intelligence’ which is, in a sense, critical ability for better social life, as well as general ‘academic achievement’ and ‘capability development’.

We offer opportunities to our colleagues to join our project, especially those who are interested in developmental and cognitive neuroscience or education and are engaged in such issues in hospitals or schools. With wide support over our university, we believe that our project can propose new approaches for child-raising and special-support education, based on modern neuroscience.
